How much mulch do I need?
For weed suppression and moisture retention, 2–3 inches is the sweet spot for established beds. Use 3–4 inches for new beds or around trees, and avoid mounding mulch against trunks — that traps moisture and invites rot.
Bags vs bulk
Bagged mulch comes mostly in 2 cu ft bags. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard (27 cu ft, roughly 13.5 bags). Bulk is cheaper per cubic foot once you need more than about 10 bags — and faster to spread.
