PAN Aadhaar Link Status: How to Check and Link (Official Guide 2026)

If your PAN and Aadhaar aren't linked, your PAN is inoperative — you can't file ITR, refunds are held, and TDS is deducted at higher rates. Checking the link status takes 30 seconds and fixing it takes ten minutes on the official Income Tax portal. Here's the exact process.

Check link status (30 seconds, no login)

  • Go to https://www.incometax.gov.in
  • Under Quick Links on the left, click Link Aadhaar Status
  • Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, click View Link Aadhaar Status
  • You'll see one of three messages:
  • - 'Your PAN is already linked to given Aadhaar' — you're done, no action needed
  • - 'Your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar' — you need to link (steps below)
  • - 'Link Aadhaar request is pending with UIDAI for validation' — check again after 24-48 hours

How to link PAN with Aadhaar

Since 1 July 2023, linking requires a ₹1,000 fee (paid via challan under Section 234H). Steps:

  • Go to https://www.incometax.gov.ine-Pay Tax (under Quick Links)
  • Enter PAN, confirm PAN, enter mobile → OTP
  • Select Income TaxAssessment Year 2026-27Type of Payment: Other Receipts (500)Sub-type: Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar
  • Pay ₹1,000 via net banking / debit card / UPI
  • Wait 4-5 working days for the payment to reflect
  • Go back to Link Aadhaar under Quick Links, enter PAN + Aadhaar, click Validate
  • OTP to Aadhaar-linked mobile → submit
  • Confirmation appears; status updates in 24-48 hours

What happens if PAN is not linked

As per CBDT, an inoperative PAN means:

  • You cannot file Income Tax Return
  • Pending refunds are not released
  • TDS is deducted at higher rate (20%+ under Section 206AA)
  • TCS collected at higher rate
  • KYC-linked services (mutual funds, demat, some banks) may be blocked
  • Form 26AS, AIS, TIS stop updating properly

Who is exempt from linking

Per the Income Tax Department notification, the following are exempt:

  • Residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and the Union Territory of J&K
  • Non-Residents as per the Income Tax Act
  • Anyone aged 80 years or above at any time during the previous year
  • Individuals who are not citizens of India

If you fall in these categories, your PAN stays operative even without linking.

Common problems

  • 'Aadhaar/PAN details do not match': name, DOB, or gender differs between the two. Correct the mismatch first — usually the Aadhaar side is easier to update via https://myaadhaar.uidai.in.
  • Payment done but status not updating: takes 4-7 working days after payment. Check challan status under e-Pay Tax → Payment History.
  • Wrong Assessment Year selected while paying: don't pay again — write to efilingwebmanager@incometax.gov.in with challan details.
